About Me
My name is Alex (or AJ) Guthrie. My journey with Jesus began when I was 20 years old after years of agnosticism and avoiding the topics of belief, God and faith altogether. At 19, I couldn’t avoid it any longer. Questions about what happens when we die began to flood my mind, leading to panic attacks and an unquenchable desire to find the truth. After studying the major world religions, countless hours of researching, listening to debates and testimonies I noticed something profound that changed my life. Jesus Christ of Nazareth preached, proclaimed and offered something no other religion could: assurance. He offered assurance of salvation and forgiveness, assurance that I was deeply loved. His death on the cross and His resurrection spoke to the depths of my soul that He wanted me and that I didn’t have to earn it. As someone who had lived a life of sin, rebellion and hurting the people who loved me most, I was acutely aware that I’d never be able to earn right standing with a Holy and perfect God. My prayer started to become “God, I hope You are Jesus”. I prayed and prayed and God began to meet me in a real way, all alone in my bedroom. He showed me that not only is He very real but He can be experienced by us here on earth. At 20 years old, at a Chris Tomlin concert I “prayed the prayer”. I asked Jesus to be the Lord of my life and told Him I desired to follow Him forever.
Since that day, I have had a burning passion for the presence of God and helping the world around me encounter Him the way I did. This pursuit has taken me all over the world to share His love. From preaching on street corners, to going door to door in neighborhoods, to leading teams into the nations, to stopping for the one at grocery stores and shopping malls and so much more. I believe with my whole heart that the Gospel is a “show and tell” Gospel. God has taught me that just like the disciples who followed Jesus when He was alive, we too can bring the Good News to people with accompanying miracles, signs, wonders and the presence of God. When we lead with demonstrating the power of God, it can open up the hearts of even some of the most skeptical, disbelieving people. God is so generous to do so.
Passion for the presence of God has also led me into a life of pursuing Him in worship and music has been a huge part of that. I did not sing in front of people or play an instrument until I was 20, after I was born again. There’s so much I have learned about musical worship over the years. God blessed me with incredible mentors and friends to learn from. Leading worship has become one of the great joys of my life. One thing I’ve found is that God’s presence inhabits the praises of His people. Throughout the years I’ve spent leading worship in churches and at Christian conferences, in prayer rooms, living rooms and at Christian events, a growing curiosity began in me where I began to wonder what might happen if I took worship outside into public places. I wondered if the very real and tangible presence of God could also be experienced by those who don’t know Him yet if worship were put a bit more “on display” for the world around me. I had a dream in 2021 where I saw a well known evangelist holding hands with a well known worship leader and when I awoke from the dream, I felt God was speaking to my heart saying: “I want to marry together worship and evangelism”. I now regularly take worship out of the four walls of the church and to the streets!
